Copenhagen extends the Copenpay initiative to support sustainable tourism.
The Danish capital Copenhagen, even the coming summer, will try to encourage its visitors to travel and explore places in a more sustainable way. In response to climate change and excessive tourism in the world, the metropolis is about to extend its last year’s Copenpay initiative, which will be extended with additional discounts and focused on trains passengers. The DPA reported on Monday, TASR writes.
During the pilot project, in the summer of 2024, visitors to Copenhagen for the use of a bicycle, metro or for garbage collection could gain cultural experiences, drinks or other benefits. The city now plans to double this offer for a period of nine weeks and increase the number of activities up to three times, to a total of 90.
Sustainable travel
“Tourism is significantly involved in carbon dioxide emissions and it is necessary to change the minds of tourists and support them to make decisions more environmentally friendly,” says Wonderful Copenhagen.
The Copenpay initiative will take place this year from 17 June to 17 August. The rewards will be distributed especially for train travel. Those who transport to Copenhagen in this way can get free bicycles, yoga lessons, guided tours, or lower admission to one of the biggest attractions in the city. In addition, holidaymakers will be motivated to travel less, but stay longer.
New approach to tourism
“By integrating more responsible activities into Copenpay’s experiences, it will re -define access to tourism in Copenhagen,” said Wonderful Copenhagen Sören Pedersen, head of Wonderful Copenhagen. According to DPA, the aim of the project is not to attract more tourists to the city, but to raise their awareness of more sustainable travel.
