Doctor, interim president argues that the issue needs to be debated; Pharmacies claim that the measure brings risks to public health
The interim president, (PSB), said on Monday (12.MAI.2025) that the government of the president (PT) will study and discuss the sale of drugs without revenue in supermarkets.
“It is a topic to be debated, to be discussed. As it is without prescription, it does not have the medical limitations. But it is a theme that the government will study”said Alckmin, who is a doctor, in an event of the (Paulista Association of Supermarkets).
Authorization for the sale of revenue -free medicines in supermarkets and the like is in a bill () that is being processed in the House of Representatives.
Pharmaceutical organizations are against and claim that the measure brings risks to public health. Associations and government agencies advocate purchase only in specialized establishments.
The bill is by the Federal Deputy (Somos-GO) with the justification of facilitating the population’s access to medicines that do not need prescription.
Abrafarma (Brazilian Association of Pharmacy and Drugstores Networks) says that ordinary remedies.
In addition to health risks, there are economic concerns. Brazil has over 90,000 pharmacies, many of which are small establishments.
The sale of drugs in supermarkets was allowed in 1994 and 1995. However, the authorization was revoked and the practice remains prohibited.
