“Every day I think of other people around the world who are victims of violence and survive. It’s really the most powerless feeling, especially when you question if the judiciary can really protect it,” she said in a statement read by Los Angeles County Prosecutor George Gasco, at a press conference after Lanez’s conviction.
“Fortunately, the public prosecutor’s office struggled for me. I’m incredibly grateful to them and the jury for attention to evidence and supporting the truth. But if it can happen to me, imagine those who don’t have the resources and support systems to help them.”
Lanez insisted on his innocence and his lawyers appealed from his conviction. In May 2023, a judge denied a request for him to receive a new trial. The star’s legal team argued that some of the evidence presented had been erroneously admitted to the trial.
