Marques Mendes says he has an understanding close to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa when he said he intends to give possession to an executive who can make the government program possible in Parliament.
Presidential candidate Luís Marques Mendes ranked this Tuesday as a vital issue for the country and advocated that the election campaign for the legislatures is not being enlightening for the Portuguese.
Marques Mendes says he has an understanding close to the current president of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, when he said he intends to give possession to an executive who can make the government program viable in Parliament.
“Yes, I agree. The President of the Republic explained again in recent days his great concern for stability. And I think it is good. Why do we have a unique situation, after these elections, next Sunday, for about a year, it is not possible to dissolve Parliament. This may make the country fall into a impasse,” said Marques Mendes in statements at the end of an Ephemera — Library and Archive of José Pacheco Pereira, in Barreiro, in the district of Setúbal.
The social democrat and presidential candidate argues that “there is nothing better than warning people to it before the vote.”
“I have for myself the following, stability is a vital issue for the country,” he said adding that it is not possible to have growth, development and more social state if there is no stability and that there are only two ways to solve the issue: “It is the Portuguese or the political parties.”
“In a word, the president is right”
The Portuguese, he said, may, on the 18th, to give conditions of governance to a party or a coalition, or after the elections are the parties to ensure the minimum of stability conditions.
“But in a word, the president is right, especially in this idea, the issue of stability has never been as important as in these elections on May 18,” he said.
Asked if the campaign is being enlightening, Marques Mendes said no.
“No, I don’t think. With all the frankness, I don’t think, nor do I think, first, that the debates were very enlightening. It was the possible, but they were not very enlightening,” he said.
Marques Mendes considers that the campaign has had many omissions, especially because it also has no discussion of what is happening in the world.
“I can’t understand how an election campaign is done, with the world in its state, with Europe in its state, with the brutal changes that are happening on a global scale, and this is not a theme of debate in election campaign. It is very difficult to understand, because we are not an island and what happens in Europe, what happens in the world, the more it is not an economic point of view, the situation of Portugal,” he said.
Asked if the lack of clarification that advocates exist in the election campaign for the legislatures will favor abstention, the presidential candidate says fear that this can happen.
“I hope not, but I fear yes. The good sign was last Sunday, the anticipated vote with more people than the previous year. This is a good sign and if this signal is consolidated next Sunday, excellent, but I have some fears about it, but as I am an optimist I believe abstention will continue to fall,” he said.
