The new German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed on Wednesday that his coalition government will continue to significantly support Kiev, but Germany will not become one of the parties of the conflict in Ukraine. TASR informs according to the DPA report.
“One thing is clear: we are not one of the parties of the war, nor will we become it,” Merz said in his first regular appearance before the deputies of the Federal Assembly since last week’s accession to the office. “However, we are not even a non -participated third party, not even a neutral intermediary between the two parties,” he pointed out.
Merz: West must not be divided
According to DPA, Merz also pointed out that there is no need to doubt the unconditional support of Ukraine by Germany and that all Russia’s attempts to cause a split between European allies will encounter their determination, unity and readiness for defense.
Merz, in his own words, will offer partners and friends a reliable and predictable foreign and security policy that will serve strong Europe and will follow common interests and European values.
As he pointed out, in interviews with Russia about the end of the war in Ukraine will be advocated for transatlantic unity. “It is extremely important for the political West to be distributed,” he stressed, saying that “he will continue to make every effort to ensure the greatest unity between European and American partners.”
Turning to the US
His statements come after a turnover in the US foreign policy, which raised concerns that Donald Trump’s administration could make concessions to Russia in peace negotiations with Ukraine, DPA recalls. Until now, the European Allies of Washington have been in interviews between the US and Russia, initiated by Trump, to a large extent to the siding. Merz stressed that Ukraine cannot be forced to consent to the Peace Agreement against its will.
“We hope and we all work hard to take this clear attitude not only in Europe, but also by our American partners,” he said.
At the same time, Merz thanked Trump for the support of the joint proposal of Germany, France, Poland and Britain for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in the fighting in Ukraine. Such a ceasefire can prepare a way to peace negotiations, he added.
