Turkey police detained 97 students on Tuesday (13) at Bogazici University in Istanbul during a protest against a conference of Islamic preachers on the campus, the city governor said.
Students protested a lecture by Nureddin Yildiz, an Islamic preacher known for controversial opinions on early marriages.
The event was organized by a university student club.
The students were arrested when they tried to break a police barricade at the campus, Istanbul Governor Davut Gul said on Tuesday night (13).
According to the politician, 13 police officers were injured when they fell in a five -meter construction pit during fights.
In recent months, college students have been at the forefront of protests in Türkiye due to the main political rival of President Tayyip Erdogan.
Students and professors at Bogazici University have in recent years against what they consider government interference in academia.
