The body of former Uruguayan president José Mujica received a funeral procession on Wednesday (14), in Montevideo. Mujica died on Tuesday (13), at the age of 89, a victim of esophageal and liver cancer.
The procession began in the Executive Tower, headquarters of the Uruguayan Executive, and followed the emblematic places of the political trajectory of Mujica, including the headquarters of the National Liberation Movement and the Legislative Palace.
The former president’s body was transported covered by the Uruguayan flag, while a crowd, with many wearing black in mourning, accompanied the journey.

Upon arrival at the Legislative Palace, the funeral is scheduled to last at least 24 hours, with the entry of the public released from 15h.
There will be no time limit for farewells. According to the Uruguayan Parliament Protocol Director, Mujica’s wife, Lucía Topolansky, asked “the Uruguayans who wanted to get closer to say goodbye could do so, with the best convenience.”
After the wake, Mujica’s body will be cremated. He expressed the desire for his ashes to be thrown next to his dog Manuela, who is buried in his farm on the outskirts of Montevideo.
