Get to know the cliff that reminds the Algarve but is in Spain and is the highest in Europe

The beaches of the Algarve Well are known by the cliffs around them and these are protagonists of a large part of the postcards that tourists take home after visiting the region. However, in the neighboring country and very close to the Algarve you can also find some cliffs similar to those seeing in the southern region of Portugal. Still, it is on a beach in Spain that is the highest dunar cliff in Europe.

A unique natural training

Between Matalascañas and Mazagón, on the coast of Huelva, is a unique natural formation that imposes itself discreetly in the landscape. It is the cliff of aspects and, according to, is considered the highest dunar cliff in Europe, more than 30 meters high at certain points.

Classified as a natural monument since 2001, this structure is distinguished by not being composed of rocks, as usually happens with cliffs, but by fossil dunes. These dunes were formed over 14,000 years ago from the accumulation of sands carried by wind and water.

Has a privileged location

Located on Castilla Beach, one of the most extensive and most preserved southern Spain, the cliff stands out for its geological and ecological diversity. The area is composed of a mosaic of Mediterranean vegetation and pine forests, which contribute to the fixation of soils.

Access to the area is made through the Cuesta Maneli rail, where a 1.5 kilometers long was built. Along the way, visitors can observe several plant and animal species that inhabit the site.

Flora and Fauna in Harmony

Among the flora identified in the region are plants, such as the dressing rooms and zimbros, while fauna is represented by animals, such as the Moorish turtle, the mangusto and even the rare fool’s viper. This natural balance reinforces the importance of its conservation.

At the end of the route visitors are presented with a natural viewpoint that offers a wide view of the cliff and the Atlantic Ocean. From this point it is possible to access the stairs to Castilla beach, characterized by gold sands and clear waters.

Striking colors in the cliff layers

The layers that make up the Asperillo reveal a color palette that goes from orange to white, through ocher and black. These shades result from the composition of the materials present, such as peat and groundwater iron oxide.

In some zones there are small springs called droplets. These groundwater output points create wet microenvironment where different vegetation grows from the predominant, forming striking contrasts with the remaining dry ground.

A natural file of time and life

This natural enclave keeps in its layers not only old sediments, but also traces of time and biodiversity. It is an area that attracts researchers and nature lovers interested in better understanding the evolution of the territory.

Asperillo’s cliff remains one of the most unknown treasures in southern Spain. Its dimension, formation and ecological wealth make it a unique place, sought by those who value poorly intervened natural landscapes and walking in a protected environment.
