US federal agencies cut $ 2.6 billion in grants to the university, alleging cases of campus discrimination from one of the world’s most renowned institutions
A will allocate $ 250 million (1.4 billion reais in the current price) to the financing of “critical research” after the government of announced intended for this teaching center. American federal agencies cut $ 2.6 billion (R $ 14.5 billion in the current price) in grants to Harvard, arguing that there is discrimination in the campus of this one of the best universities in the world.
The White House is attacking the financing of some universities that, according to the executive, tolerate anti -Semitism and maintain programs to include minority members. The US government also revoked visas to deport students who participated in demonstrations against the Gaza War because they consider they support the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.
Harvard has already taken this case to the courts, as he considers that Donald Trump’s government is trying to illegally control the basic aspects of the university’s functioning. “Although we cannot assume all the cost of suspended or canceled federal funds, we will mobilize financial resources to support critical research activity during a transitional period,” Harvard president Alan Garber, and his dean, John Manning, said in a joint statement released on Wednesday (14).
The university “will continue working with our researchers to identify alternative financing sources,” they added. In the statement, Garber and Manning warn that “illegal freezing and termination” of Federal Government subsidies were “preventing research that saves lives… and losing years of important work”.
Harvard last year had $ 53.2 billion (about 329 billion reais, quoting at the time), and was the most funed American university. The Teaching Center aroused Trump’s wrath for refusing to meet its government supervision requirements for student admissions and personnel hiring to avoid what the White House considers a political bias. In reprisal of this decision, Trump left Harvard without $ 2.2 billion (12.3 billion reais in the current quotation) of the federal budget. On Tuesday, the Republican announced the freezing of another $ 450 million (2.5 billion reais) scheduled for the university.
