Former President Michel Temer (MDB) stated that Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF) has adopted a policy pacification stance by reviewing penalties applied to scammer acts of 8 January 2023. The statement was made on Wednesday (14) in New York.
According to Temer, Moraes, who was his Justice Minister and nominated by him to the STF in 2016, does not act radically, as allies of former President Jair Bolsonaro say. “ [do] January 8, he has already released a lot of people. So he did something right at the moment he should do, ”he said.“ Those feathers of 14, 15, 17 years must be reduced. This is starting to happen. And there are legal instruments for that. ”
Temer considers that the review of penalties by the Supreme is a more useful alternative than the approval of an amnesty by the National Congress, which has been articulated by pocket parliamentarians. “It is better that the Supreme resolves the subject with new dosage of penalties,” he said.

Temer also stressed the role of Moraes in the 2022 elections, in chairing the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). “Brazil owes him a lot, because there is no doubt that he had legal courage and even personal there in the TSE to secure the elections.”
In the evaluation of the emedebista, the search for solutions that consider the political climate is important to preserve stability. “Harmony, when there is this violent thing, is an unconstitutional thing. […] I think today the country begins to move towards the thesis of a certain harmony, a certain pacification, ”he concluded.
