The Abraji (Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism) requested on Thursday (15) that the (Supreme Court) review the decision that prohibited journalists from recording audios or making images at hearings about the coup plot, scheduled to start next week. One of the defendants of the action is the former president ().
The Supreme Court veto reaches the sessions planned between May 19 and June 2, when witnesses of the criminal action on the attempted coup in 2022 will begin to be heard. Photographers and cameramen cannot even be accredited. Journalists will be able to watch a big screen.
Videos of the hearings will only be made available to the public in the court system after the last statement. Among the witnesses pointed out are the former army commander Freire Gomes and the governors of, (), and (), as well as deputies and senators. The complete list of witnesses is being updated constantly, as well as the days and times of testimonials.
The prohibition was based on an article of the Penal Code that says witnesses cannot even hear the statements of each other. Abraji disputes the decision and argues that the population is entitled to access this information.
“The attentive monitoring of the public interest processes, which are not secret of justice, is essential,” the association wrote in a statement.
“Abraji asks the Supreme Court to consider, by adopting these rules, its duty to protect the freedom of the press and the right to inform, so that the population has access to information of high public interest, considering that the testimonials are from authorities and that it is not the disclosure made by the press that will provide the following statements,” said Abraji.
The ones are pointed out as the “crucial core” of the attempted coup. In addition to Bolsonaro, they also respond to the process (former man director and federal deputy); Almir Garnier (former Navy Commander); (Former Minister of Justice and former Secretary of Public Security of the Federal District); (Former Minister of the Institutional Security Office); (former assistant of Bolsonaro’s orders); Paulo Sergio Nogueira (former Minister of Defense); and (former minister of the Civil House).
