Barcelona won on Thursday (15) the title of the Spanish Championship for the 28th time in its history, by beating Espanyol 2-0 at the Cornellà-El Prat Stadium. The goals were scored by Lamine Yamal and Fermín.
With two rounds left to the end of the competition, the Catalan team opened seven points of advantage over the vice-leader Real Madrid (85 to 78), mathematically ensuring the title.
The team led by German coach Hansi Flick took a decisive step towards the achievement last Sunday by defeating his biggest rival 4-3.
This is Barcelona’s first Spanish title under Flick, succeeding the winning of the 2022–2023 season, when the team was trained by Xavi Hernández. But this time, the scenario was quite different.
With few signings, Flick knew how to make the most of Polish goal bearing Robert Lewandowski and rescued the good football of Brazilian Raphinha, who even expressed the desire to leave the club at the beginning of the season.
Above all, however, the coach explored the talent of young Lamine Yamal. At 17, the striker is already among the most promising names of world football and was a key piece in the reconquest of the trust of the fans.
Barça, who went into crisis after Lionel Messi’s departure in 2021 and faces serious financial problems that make new hiring difficult, started the campaign brilliantly. He quickly took the lead, and in October 2024 he earned even more morale by applying a 4-0 at Real Madrid in the first of the four classics of the season.
However, a sequence of bad results in November – Mês Flick classified as “shit” – and December made the team lose its end to Atletico Madrid, who won the direct confrontation at the end of the year.
The defeat served as a turning point. In January, Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup with a convincing 5-2 win over Real Madrid in the second classic of the season. Shortly thereafter, he resumed the Spanish championship leadership definitively.
With high morals, the club still won the King Cup in April, by winning Real Madrid again, this time 3-2 in overtime.
Despite the double in national competitions, the season had a bitter flavor for the Catalans, who were eliminated in the Champions League semifinal. In an electrifying confrontation against Inter Milan, the team was surpassed by an aggregate score of 7 to 6.
