Average marriage time fell to 13.8 years; Longer rate was registered in the Midwest
Brazil registered 440,827 divorces in 2023, according to data released on Friday (16.MAI.2025) by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), in the Statistics Statistics 2023. The number represents a 4.9% growth compared to 420,039 of 2022. EIS A (PDF – 2 MB).
In addition, the average time between marriage and divorce fell to 13.8 years in 2023 – a significant reduction compared to 2010, when the average was 16 years. In the regions of the country, this duration ranges from 12.3 to 15.4 years.
According to the IBGE, the factors that may be related to the increase in divorces are the aging of the population, the growth of recreases and the greater legal flexibility for the end of the union.
The largest regional variations occurred in the Midwest (16.8%) and North (13.1%) regions. The Northeast also showed a relevant increase of 9.9%.
According to the survey, the general divorce rate in Brazil was 2.8 per thousand inhabitants with 20 years or older. The Midwest region leads the ranking, with 3.6%, followed by the Southeast, with 3.4%. The lowest rates were observed in the north and northeast.
Among the states, Rondônia registered the largest number of divorces in the country, while in Roraima there were the smallest amount of separations.
In 2023, men divorced with an average of 44.3 years, while women had, on average, 41.4 years on the date of separation.
The proportion of couples with minor children at the time of divorce also caught the attention: 46.3% of court dissolutions involved this group.
The shared custody was recorded in 42.3% of cases – an advance compared to 2014, when this number was only 7.5%.
In the general scenario, every 100 marriages between people of different sexes registered in Brazil, about 47 ended in divorce in 2023.
