End of low-cost flights? New 400 km/h train will connect Portugal to Europe

An ambitious rail project promises to significantly alter the way Europeans move through the continent. This train is called Starline and was presented by Think Tank ’21st Europe’. This initiative aims to create an extensive high -speed network that will connect 39 European capitals, with trains to circulate between 300 and 400 km/h. The goal is to make long -range travel faster, affordable and environmentally friendly, reducing the use of air transport.

An ambitious and integrated proposal

The Starline proposal was revealed during the first summit ’21st Europe’ in Barcelona. The planned railway network will cover more than 22,000 kilometers, linking cities such as Lisbon, Kiev, Bucarest and Helsinchia in a single system, free from the limitations of national borders.

The goal, according to the, is to position the railroad as the preferential solution for medium and long distance travel on the European continent, promoting more sustainable and efficient mobility.

Fast, comfortable and connected trips

According to the project responsible, the Starline network will allow, for example, to reduce the route between Helsinquia and Berlin to just over five hours. Routes like Milan-Munique would be short enough to ensure regular connections between important economic centers.

The design of each train, as referred to by the same source, is inspired by the European Union flag, with stars decorating the wagons, and the interior is thought to offer maximum comfort, including zones of silence, spaces for families, coffee shops and ergonomic seats.

In addition, the stations will be conceived as dynamic hubs, integrating public squares and cultural spaces, reinforcing the role of the railroad in urban and social development.

Sustainability and innovative governance

Starline, as reported by Executive Digest, arises in a context where the European Union reinforces its commitments to reduce carbon emissions. The project presents as a green alternative to regional aviation, with the potential to cut the number of short-distance flights within 80% within Europe.

To ensure the efficiency of the network, it is proposed to create a new European rail authority (era), which would be responsible for the supervision of operation and maintenance.

Management will be in charge of private operators, while financing will be public, ensuring the project’s financial sustainability.

The trains will use energy exclusively from renewable sources, increasing energy independence and reduced environmental impact.

We recommend:

Technical, political and financial challenges

Despite the ambitious view, according to the same source, the project faces significant obstacles. Financing and coordination between various governments is complex, requiring a joint and continuous effort.

Technical standardization, currently fragmented, is also a challenge, given the diversity of European rail systems.

The ‘Midden Europe’ platform pointed out flaws on the original plan, namely the proposal of an adriatic tunnel and the attractions to connect Zagreb to Rome, an extremely complex and expensive engineering work whose viability is concerned.

Affordable rates, but adhesion is uncertain

Starline promises competitive prices and a unified billion system, facilitating the purchase of tickets and connections between lines. However, experts question whether these measures will be enough to compete with aviation, which continues to be cheaper and faster in many cases.

Journalist Simon Calder was enthusiastic about the concept, but stressed the need for profound renovation of the European rail infrastructure to make the train a truly attractive and efficient alternative.

A vision for the future of European mobility

According to Executive Digest, Starline represents a bold view of mobility in Europe. If the technical, financial and political challenges are overcome, you can redefine the travels on the continent, consolidating the train as the main means for distance travel.

This project comes at a decisive moment for Europe, aligning with climate goals and transport digitization, representing an important step for a more sustainable and integrated future.
