Jamie Dimon’s name by JPMorgan Chase quickly viralized earlier this year after some heated statements about the dangers of remote work. This Thursday (15), he acknowledged that his emotions were a little on the skin, but reaffirmed the need to bring the employees back to the office.

“I let the emotions take me a little,” Dimon said in an interview with Bloomberg Televisionwhen asked about the comments he made in February during a meeting with employees in Columbus, Ohio.

At that moment, the CEO – one of Wall Street’s most frank leaders – caused a stir in answering a question about an online petition that some employees had released to contest the recent order of return to his bank’s office. The executive, visibly frustrated and cursing during his statements, said he didn’t care how many people signed.

On Thursday (15), during the JPMorgan Global Market Conference in Paris, Dimon stated that the question was legitimate.

“I gave a very detailed answer about why it doesn’t work for young people, why it doesn’t work for management, why it doesn’t work for innovation,” he said. “I completely applaud your right to not want to go to the office every day. But you won’t tell JPMorgan what to do.”

Dimon said the bank has about 10% of home office jobs. He added that he has not seen an additional loss of employees since the policy was established, although he had to make some modifications in certain areas where there were not enough seats.

JPMorgan told employees to return to the office five days a week earlier this year, ending the hybrid work option for thousands of employees and returning to the presence policy that was in force before the pandemic. The decision expanded the rules announced in April 2023 that required bank managing directors to be present five days a week.

At the February meeting, Dimon cited a reduction in efficiency and creativity in hybrid work environments. He said at the time that the younger employees were socially behind due to these arrangements. He reiterated some of these comments on Thursday.

“I think our employees will be happier over time,” he said. “And young people learn the right way; it’s a learning system and you can’t learn working from your basement.”
