Janja is announced as a special COP30 envoy for the theme “Women”

The United Nations Conference Organization on Climate Change of 2025 (COP30) announced this week the names of the first special envoy that will act directly in the articulation of civil society with the event. Among the chosen ones are the first lady of Brazil, Janja da Silva, and former Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Arden.

The role of special envoys will be to promote the engagement of different sectors in climate discussions that will take place in Belém, the capital of Pará, between November 10 and 21. Janja was appointed representative of women, while Jacinda will represent Oceania. Frederico Assis, former advisor to Celso Amorim, Laurence Tubiana and Ethel Maciel, with performances in the areas of information, Europe and Health, respectively, were also announced.

COP30 is considered the largest international forum aimed at facing climate change. The expectation of the Brazilian government is to receive delegations from more than 190 countries, as well as environmental organizations, experts and civil society leaders to discuss the advances and challenges in meeting the climate goals set in previous agreements.

According to the organization of the event, the special envoys will have as its main mission to hear the sectors they represent and bring their concerns and suggestions to the negotiating table. At the same time, they should be spokesmen for COP30 Guidelines and Commitments in their respective areas.

The initial list of envoys also includes Laurence Tubiana, which has been negotiating of the Paris Agreement and will represent Europe; Ethel Maciel, epidemiologist specializing in infectious diseases, who will work in the health area; and Frederico Assis, who will deal with the integrity of information in the context of climate change.

In a letter released last week, the president of COP30, André Corrêa do Lago, warned of the risk of a climate “domino effect” if there is no coordinated action of countries. According to him, geopolitical, socioeconomic and environmental challenges require robust multilateral effort to contain the effects of climate change on the planet.
