The sixth stage of the return to Italy, which turned Potenza to Naples in a 225 km course – the longest of this edition – was marked by a moment of great tension in the final kilometers. A man broke into the road and tried to overthrow the platoon, extending ribbons ahead of the cyclists.
The unexpected gesture endangered athletes’ safety and narrowly did not cause a serious accident at a time when the group rolled at high speed towards the goal. Fortunately, cyclists were able to avoid impact, and the situation was quickly controlled by the security forces present at the site.
The incident immediately generated reactions of indignation, both among supporters and within the participating teams, which call for stricter measures to ensure the safety of runners along the way.
