Russian President Vladimir Putin does not mean this with peace negotiations seriously, but the meeting in Istanbul is also good news. Thus the Slovak opposition evaluates the current meeting in Istanbul, Turkey.
However, the coalition parties headed by Direction-SD, which often talks about the need to establish “peace” between Russia and Ukraine, is now paradoxically silent.
Negotiations are underway today. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Greenable to Istanbul came, but Russian President Putin did not.
Learn what the Slovak parliamentary parties think of peace negotiations:
1. Do you support peace negotiations in Istanbul between Ukraine and Russia?
Yes, we support every peace initiative. However, peace negotiations must take place among equal partners, without pressure, without dictation and especially without the requirements that would deny the sovereignty of Ukraine.
2. How do you perceive the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin?
The absence of Vladimir Putin is a clear signal that he is not interested in real and responsible negotiations. It declares willingness to negotiate “without conditions”, but at the same time he says that a condition of peace is a discussion about the “causes of conflict”, which means the NATO extension after 1997 and the possible membership of Ukraine in the Alliance and the influence of the West. This is not peace, it is an attempt to push its own geopolitical interests by force.
3. What do you expect from negotiations?
I expect that their aim will be a fair and sustainable peace, not the legitimization of Russian demands to weaken NATO and the impact of the democratic world. However, negotiations must not be about the fact that Ukraine will waive its right to self -defense, that it will question its right to enter into any defense alliances, or that Europe will return to the spheres of influence according to the Kremlin’s ideas. Such requirements are not the basis of peace, but by continuing aggression by other means.
Freedom and Solidarity (Juraj Krúpa):
1. Do you support peace negotiations in Istanbul between Ukraine and Russia?
Of course, we support peace negotiations. Every meeting that would contribute to the ceasefire is welcome. At the same time, we do not expect a breakthrough in the conflict. Russia does not respond to any ceasefire challenges to which it was called on the international community. It has been two months since the US and Ukraine have agreed with the ceasefire, which Russia ignores, as well as the last challenge of the coalition willing.
2. How do you perceive the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin?
Despite the willingness of Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky to participate in negotiations and thus contribute to the earliest ceasefire, Vladimir Putin decided to ignore the possibility of direct negotiations. This is evidenced by his arrogance and the haughty approach to the negotiating partners whose obviously leads his nose. It is clear from this approach that it does not have a real interest in peace. With this gesture, he tries to indicate that he is not in a hurry and is not interested in the rapid conflict resolution.
3. What do you expect from negotiations?
Russia will submit exaggerated requirements that Ukraine will not be able to meet. This will try to stretch the process of negotiations and find the pretext that it is Ukraine, which is not willing to proceed to peace. Peace according to Russian conditions. Even if the ceasefire has been declared over time, it will be in the interests of Russia to stretch negotiations for peace as long as possible with the submission of constant new requirements to try to disturb the uniform process of the West. It is doing well in part, as states such as Slovakia and Hungary are promoting the narrative of Russian peace in Ukraine with the promotion of Russian requirements against Ukraine.
Christian Democratic Movement (KDH):
- Do you support peace negotiations in Istanbul between Ukraine and Russia?
KDH has long supported all constructive steps that have the potential to lead to stopping fighting and a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine. And at the domestic and European level. Only righteous peace will end the huge suffering of people. For this reason, we perceive the meeting in Istanbul as the next step that can lead to this goal. However, negotiations require patience, sincerity and humility on both sides. So far, however, doubt about its true intentions seems to be justified from the previous steps of the Russian Federation.
2. How do you perceive the non -participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin?
Vladimir Putin’s unwillingness to participate in the negotiations is another proof of what we have known for a long time – that he himself is particularly boycotted by himself. Unfortunately, some of our politicians still do not want to admit this reality, and they try to cover this at all costs by booting and misinformation. And only because of its own political benefit, but unfortunately at the cost of weakening the pressure on the Russian Federation to finally end the terrible suffering of the population of Ukraine.
3. What do you expect from negotiations?
We especially appreciate the proactive approach of Ukraine and the United States in negotiating a draft 30-day ceasefire to be submitted to Russia now. This agreement creates the foundations for the safety of Ukraine and also talks about the clear role of Europe in the peace process. Now, however, it will be on the Russian Federation to show whether it is really worth the composition of weapons.
