World Press photo suspends authorship assignment to the photograph “The Girl of Napalm”

Documentary disputes the attribution of the image to photojournalist Nick ut

The World Press Photo suspended the authorship of “The Girl of Napalm”, a 1973 prize -winning photograph, after the debut of Bao Nguyen’s documentary “The Stringer”, which disputes the attribution of this image to the photojournalist Nick ut.

The decision was announced by the World Press Photo Foundation, along with the findings of the investigation raised by the documentary, which point to the possibility of “the NGYEN Thanh NGHE or Huynh Congid Photographers being in the best position to take photography instead of Nick Ut.”

“Thus, we suspend the attribution of ‘The Terror of War’ [‘Menina do Napalm’] Nick ut, starting today, “the foundation states in a statement.

“The girl of Napalm”, also known as “The Terror of War,” one of the best known Vietname War photographs, shows a seriously burned Vietnamese girl running naked on a road after a Napalm attack in the southern trang bang region of 1972.

The image gave the Vietnamite American photographer of the Associated Press (AP) Huynh Cong UT, better known as Nick UT, the Pulitzer Prize and the World Press photo in 1973.

Last January, a documentary shown at the Sundance Film Festival, “The Stringer,” attributed the photo to a ‘freelance’ journalist Vietnamese, Nguyen Thanh Nghe, who is interviewed in the movie.

The revelation led to the US agency AP equally an investigation, which released last May 6, concluding that “there is no definitive evidence, by [seus] standards, to change the credit of this 53 -year photo “.

“The girl of Napalm” in the center of the image, Kim Phuc Phan Thi, who became a Canadian citizen, continued to witness through life the attack of US forces on the basis of photography and the terror of war.
