The study points out that there is a significant difference between officially recorded and estimated homicides. Therefore, it uses statistical methodologies to correct distortions caused by faults in investigations, absence of adequate expertise and omissions in civil records.
Unlike Acre, Pará and Amapá presented a drop in occurrences. In Pará, homicides fell from ten to four cases between 2022 and 2023. Amapá, in turn, registered no murder by 2023, after counting two in the previous year.
At the top of the ranking of indigenous violence is Roraima, with 59 homicides in 2023, a total of 11 more than the previous year. Amazonas appears in second place, with 36 cases last year, compared to 38 recorded in 2022.
In general, Brazil recorded a 10.7% increase in indigenous homicides between 2022 and 2023. There were 227 violent deaths in 2023, against 205 in the previous year, according to Atlas.
