Study of the pact against hunger shows that 70% of the population is insufficient to have healthy eating

Survey showed that the ideal basic basket for healthy eating in Brazil had a cost of $ 432 per person in April this year. This represents 21.4% of the average per capita income of Brazilians, estimated at R $ 2,020, according to more recent PNAD data (National Research for continuous household sample), released by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

The data are included in the May edition of (PDF – 2 MB), held by the Institute. The publication also revealed that more than 70% of the Brazilian population does not have enough income to pay the costs of this proper food and other expenses.

In addition, the entity points out that more than 10% of the population lives with an income lower than the total value of the basket, which is equivalent to about 21.7 million people.

“This estimate reveals that, even though it is a guaranteed right, proper food is out of the reach of the majority of the population. Our goal is to highlight the distance between the constitutional guarantee and the economic reality of families.”said the Strategic Intelligence Manager of the Hunger Pact, Ricardo Mota.

Without continuous monitoring and effective and evidence -based public policies, coping with food insecurity remains ineffective.

To calculate the cost of the ideal basket, the institute used as the basket of the Nebin (Nutrition Epidemiology and Biology Center), USP (University of São Paulo), composed of fresh and minimally processed foods, aligned with the food guide to the Brazilian population and the EAT-Lancet Commission.

Inflation

According to the newsletter, the impact of food inflation is up to 2.5 times higher for vulnerable families than for high income.

The publication highlights the prices of the food sector in the inflation of April. The food and beverage group rose 0.82%in the month, especially the significant increase in potato prices (18.29%), tomatoes (14.32%) and ground coffee (4.48%) – leaders that led the impact on IPCA (National Consumer Price Index).

In the same month, the general index was 0.43%, which reinforces the disproportionate weight of food inflation on the cost of living of families, especially those of lower income, concluded the pact against hunger.

The institute’s evaluation is that although there is a drop in products such as rice (-4.19%), papaya (-5.96%) and black beans (-5.45%), inflationary pressure remains concentrated in essential items and in naturesensitive to climate and seasonal variations.
