It looks innocent, smells beautiful and every garden looks like a fairy tale. Lilac is one of the most popular spring shrubs – attracts attention not only in color, but mainly with its sweet scent. But this is a problem. This intoxicating perfumed arms is not only attracted by us, but also uninvited guests.

Lilac flowers are among those that cannot be overlooked. Every spring, it fills the gardens with sweet scents and turns ordinary shrubs into lavender clouds. But this intoxicating beauty can have an unexpected disadvantage. The lilac is literally a magnet for the hornets. So if you go to pluck a few twigs in a vase, be really careful.

“It is a bit problematic with the trees. The suction capacity of woody ends is bad. It will help if you put the woody ends on the edge of the table and rub them with a hammer or mallet,” advises the gardener František Hlubocký, how to prolong the durability of lilac in the weight.

The largest attraction for the hornet

When the flowers start to let nectar, or when the branch is injured and the juice begins to flow, they arrive as on the call. It is not an individual – the hornets can be in the bushes the whole group and will easily spend several days there. Most often it happens in warm and colorless weather, when lilac smells the most incentive and sugar nectar is the sweetest.

Although the hornets normally avoid a person, they behave differently near Lilay. They perceive the shrub as a reservoir of food they protect. So if you approach too close while walking through the garden, they can perceive you as a threat and attack. And the stinging of hornets – unlike the bee – hurts significantly more and more sensitive people can cause a strong reaction.

Just don’t go to the flowers close

At the same time, however, lilac is not a dangerous shrub that would have to be cut off immediately. Just know when to avoid him. If you see that big humming visitors are swarming around the flowers, do not go to them unnecessarily. Do not touch the branches and definitely do not try to drive away. Usually they look at your own – if you look at your own.

And if the hornets repeatedly make a “picnic” on the lilac, it will help if you cut the plant slightly and remove the most damaged parts. In the case of large invasions, it is possible to reach for professional assistance.
