Have you ever imagined living at the bottom of the ocean? First “Habitat” should be ready by the end of this year

A British company is developing modular underwater capsules that can allow humans to live in the ocean during prolonged periods. Technology may be used for investigation, tourism or safety purposes.

Habitat Vanguard arrives in 2025

Deep, the oceanic technology and exploration company, has announced that the first habitat, called Vanguard, should be launched by the end of 2025. 12 meters long and 7.5 meters wide, will be capable of three occupants and will be used in missions up to 100 meters deep.

First step for a more advanced model

This habitat will be the starting point for Sentinel, a larger model with capacity for six people and missions up to 28 days to 200 meters deep. Sentinel will include laboratory spaces and a “lunar pool” that will allow you to get in and out of the water directly.

Scientific and military objectives

In addition to the potential for marine investigation, the company believes that this type of habitat may interest marinhas from various countries, especially for the monitoring of critical underwater infrastructures.

Cables and conduct at risk

Deep highlights the strategic importance of submarine structures. More than 95% of Internet traffic goes through underwater cables, as well as conduct that carries oil and gas, vulnerable to sabotage, explains.

Sabotage of Nord Stream pipelines in 2022 and cable damage in the Baltic Sea in 2024 are examples used by the company to justify the need for more underwater surveillance.

Modular and reusable habitat

Sentinel will be constructed with wire arc additive manufacturing technology, similar to a 3D printing, which uses metal to create an ocean pressure resistant structure.

Habitat modules are designed to be dismantled, transported and mounted flexibly, allowing the space to adapt the mission.

Deep states that in addition to scientific and military applications, these habitats can be used in the future as tourist attractions, similar to immersive aquariums.

Real Time Investigation

Infrastructure will allow scientists to collect and analyze marine samples on site, reducing the need for surface transportation.

The company aims to create in the ocean the same kind of enthusiasm that Spacex generated in space exploration, promoting innovation in the underwater environment.

Although the initial Vanguard installation site is not yet defined, Deep is negotiating with possible interested parties in Europe, Middle East and North America.

Live in the ocean as a future reality

According to the company, living in the ocean may no longer be an idea of science fiction to becoming a reality in the coming years.
