In 2024, those around the world faced a significant drop in ticket sales, with a reduction of 8.8% over the previous year, according to data from the European Audiovisual Observatory (OAS) released on Friday (16) during a conference in the Cannes Film Market. In total, 4.8 billion tickets were sold, resulting in a revenue of 28 billion euros. This decrease represents a loss of 500 million tickets compared to 2023.
The frequency in movie theaters reached 68% of 2019 levels, which was the last year before the Covid-19 pandemic. By 2023, this rate had exceeded 70%. In Europe, the situation was slightly more stable, with the frequency rate reaching 75% compared to 2019, with a slight drop of only 1.7% in 2024. On the other hand, China recorded a more sharp decrease, with a 22% drop in frequency.
The predominance of films of great film powers is evident, with 81% of productions linked to United States, China and India. While American films are widely distributed internationally, Chinese and Indian productions tend to be consumed mainly in their own markets. In Europe, 63% of the public watched American films in 2024, while local productions got only 33% market share.
