The Rio de Janeiro City Council approved on May 8 a bill for the creation of the “Reborn Stork Day”, in order to recognize the work of the artisans who create the hyperrealist dolls that have become popular among adults and generated controversy in social networks (read below). The PL is now awaiting revision of Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD), who may or may not sanction the new law.
According to the project rapporteur, Councilman Vitor Huro (MDB), the justification for the creation of the commemorative date is that “the birth of a baby is a singular moment in a woman’s life, and is no different for the Reborn moms, but their children are sent by stork, which is the name given to the artisans who customize dolls to look like real babies”.
The justification text also emphasizes the importance of these dolls for people who lost a child. “It has been used in many countries as a reminder of a young child or a baby who has not survived, and has contributed to transforming adult collectors into moms and dads, who adopt these experiences in their royal lives.”

“There are reports of cases in which psychologists are used to restore mourning and other trauma. In the case of death of a newborn child, Baby Reborn is used for a short period, always under professional guidance, assisting in the process of recomposition of the mourning mother or father.”
Mayor Eduardo Paes has until June 3 to speak up or against the creation of the law, or suggest adjustments in the text. THE Estadão He asked Rio de Janeiro if there is the mayor’s intention to sanction the PL, but had not received a return until the publication of this text.
This is not the only bill in process in the country addressing the fever of Reborn babies, but the others – one national and another – aim to ban the use of dolls in public health services or to try to take advantage of legal benefits for lap children.
