Social networks have a new controversy: hyperrealist dolls that mimic newborn. Videos posted on Tiktok and Instagram show adults treating the toy as real children, scheduling medical appointments, bottle, changing clothes, taking for a walk and even trying to wear preferential seats and queues. There are those who criticize and even question the health of adults who have supposedly treated the dolls as “real” daughters.

What is a Reborn baby?
A Reborn baby is a handcrafted hyper-realist doll. According to Daniela Baccan, a partner at Alana Babys, a store and baby manufacturer Reborn in Campinas (SP), the model has existed since the early 2000s, but has been improved with new materials for about three years to increasingly look like real babies.
This type of doll can cost between $ 750 and $ 9,500, depending on the material and the complexity of production. The most expensive are those made of solid silicone, material more like newborn skin. Some even have devices that mimic heartbeat and/or that allow the baby to receive bottle and urine by means of an inner barrel.
The most basic models, made of massively used vinyl -material in the manufacture of “normal”, rigid dolls – are the most affordable, with values that start from $ 750. “These are the most purchased for children, because silicone models are sensitive and demand care,” says the businesswoman.
Dolls can have different characteristics: skin color, eyes and even reproduce physical signs of Down syndrome. References of real babies are used and, in the case of silicone models, designed layer by layer, until it forms each double, nail and detail.
The hair, from lamb hair, is fixed wire to wire. Some dolls also follow an umbilical cord, also made of silicone. Everything can be personalized. To complete the game, the dolls can still be accompanied by a trousseau of real babies, a “birth certificate” and a vaccine card, already with a consultation scheduled for the doll to return to the store to receive vaccine and care.
