Manuel Adorni, spokesman for Javier Milei, is a candidate for the governor coalition La Libertad Avanza
The voters of the city of Buenos Aires go to the polls this Sunday (18.MAI.2025) to define 30 of the 60 chairs of the local Legislative Assembly. What might seem like a less-scale election became a national dispute, with the 3 main heads of the list representing the country’s political forces.
(MNA, Alfonsinista, Kirchnerista national movement), gives list “Agora é Buenos Aires”represents Kirchnerism and was the favorite in this political field of the former president (justicialist party, peronist). Already (lla, freedom advances, right), of “freedom advances”, spokesman of (LLA), expresses the platform of the current Argentine president.
Finally, (Pro, republican, center-right proposal), from the “Republican Proposal” list, is the candidate supported by the current head of government of Buenos Aires, (title equivalent to mayor, used for being an autonomous city). Jorge Macri, who defeated Santoro in the last municipal executive elections, is a cousin of the former president (Pro).
Legislative elections in Argentina work with a proportional system by lists and vote is mandatory for all citizens aged 18 to 70. Each location has the autonomy to define its own calendar and, every 2 years, half of the seats of local assemblies are renewed.
The election of the city of Buenos Aires, therefore, has no relation to the elections for the National Assembly of the country, which will be held on October 26. Many of the provinces prefer to coincide their local elections with nationals, but this choice is up to each province.
Empathed Entre Santoro and Adorni
An election poll released 4 days from the elections by the newspaper showed a draw between Santoro and Adorni. According to the survey of the Kirchnerist candidate and Milei spokesman both appear with 25% of voting intentions.
The MIDE EQUIPO interviewed 1,087 voters from Buenos Aires between May 7 and 10. The survey error margin is 2.97 percentage points for more or less.
Santoro, the Kirchnerist candidate, has not always identified this way. Started Its militancy in the radicalism has been president of the radical youth, having made harsh public criticism of Kirchnerism between 2012 and 2014.
From 2014, he began an approach with Kirchnerism, following the then president (citizen unit) on a Vatican trip and, in 2015, was chosen for a position in the Undersecretary for Institutional Reform. Then he was elected deputy by Buenos Aires in 2017. His trajectory reveals a change of political positioning, which he justified as part of the provocative style of social networks.
Among the main proposals of his campaign are the establishment of an investigating committee to review services to provide services between the government and companies and the conversion of buildings in the city center in accessible housing to young people.
In turn, Adorni gained national prominence as a spokesman for Argentine President Javier Milei. Born in La Plata, graduated in Economics and acted as a university professor and journalist. In 2019, he founded, with other right -wing politicians, the United Republican Party (Uni2) and was gaining prominence for its controversial positions on social networks against leftist politicians.
In 2023, already at the Milei party, he won the Martín Fierro Digital Award, in the category of “Argentina’s Best Twitteiro”. Author of the prologue of the book of Milei The end of inflationAdorni, in the text, refers to Milei as someone who has his “admiration and eternal friendship”.
Its proposals to Buenos Aires replicate Milei’s model for national policy: tax reduction, cuts in civil service and deregulation.
Macri candidate
In the same survey of the MIDE Equipo, Silvia Lospenato appears in 3rd place, with 14%, technically tied with the former mayor, head of the list “Let’s go back Buenos Aires”, which obtained 13%. Larret was part of Macri’s group, but walked away due to differences related to the alliance with Milei.
The May 18 legislative elections in Buenos Aires are a test for Pro, which has been governor for almost 18 years and bets on Mrs Silvia Lospenato as the main candidate to defend Jorge Macri’s management.
With strong support from former President Mauricio Macri, the campaign bets on direct contact with voters, highlighting previous achievements such as Metrobús and the modernization of health. Lospenato, known for having presented projects such as the “Clean Record”, in line similar to the law in Brazil, also proposes initiatives such as laws against digital violence, as well as facilitating access to housing for young people.
