It would be the first victory of an Italian tennis player since 1976, with Adriano Panatta.

But 2-0 (7/6 and 6/1), Carlos Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner, in an hour and a half of the game, and won the title of the Masters 1000 of Rome.

It was Spanish’s seventh victory over the Italian in 11 games, the fourth in a row.

Now Alcaraz, which is the number 3 in the ATP ranking, will be with second position, currently from German Alexander Zverev.

Today’s title is his seventh in Masters 1000 tournaments (he had already won Miami in 2022, Madrid in 2022 and 2023, Indian Wells in 2023 and 2024 and Monte Carlo 2025) and the second this year. In addition to the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, Alcaraz won the Rotterdam Open (Netherlands) in 2025.

This was Sinner’s first final after the suspension for doping in February. He was suspended for three months after testing at the beginning of 2024 presented a positive result for closet, an anabolic steroid. Sinner’s defense said the contamination was through a physiotherapist who had used himself, on the skin, a spray with the product that eventually contaminated the tennis player.

In the women’s tournament, the trophy returned to Italy after a 40 -year hiatus.

In a match on Saturday (17), the Italian Jasmine Paolini won the title of the tournament by beating the American Coco Gauff (6/4 and 6/2).

The last Italian victory in the tournament had been Raffaella Reggi in 1985.
