Finance Minister says that eventual presence of the product on site cannot be used to “delay” energy transition

The Minister of Finance, defended on Saturday (17.MAI.2025) research on the presence of oil in the Brazilian equatorial margin. Nevertheless, he said that the eventual discovery of the oil on site cannot “delay” the energy transition of the country.

“Brazil needs to know what has there, because it is not alone in it. That whole margin is very extensive and transcends the national territory. I am in favor of research.”stated in an interview with the program “Cities and solutions ”, and GloboNews.

The equatorial margin, considered one of the country’s new exploratory boundaries, has an estimated potential of up to 9 billion barrels of oil.

This area extends from Rio Grande do Norte to Amapá and is pointed out as one of the regions with the highest perspective of oil exploration in Brazil.

The theme brings disagreements in the government of (PT). The president also and of any exploitation, as well as Minister Alexandre Silveira (Minas and Energy).

The environmental core of his team, led by Minister Marina Silva (Environment), sees the theme with more caveats for pointing out risks to preservation.

The energy transition is the process of replacing polluting energy sources such as oil and coal, with renewable and sustainable alternatives such as solar, wind and biomass.

Praise China

Haddad also praised China’s performance in the energy transition. He cited, as examples, the production of solar panels and electric vehicles.

“China is making its automotive transition at the highest possible speed, compared to any country. Today, it already produces the cheapest electric cars”declared the minister.

Despite the expansion of the sector, some experts see with skepticism the promise of sustainability of electric cars. The argument of zero emission of greenhouse gases is considered exaggerated. Large batteries depend on the extraction of minerals such as lithium – often in an environmentally unsustainable way.

Although consolidated in the sector, a deceleration in the market of electric vehicles and Chinese hybrids is expected in 2025. According to BloombergChina’s exports fell 18% in February this year compared to the same period last year.
