How to grow celery: step by step guide

Celery is an aromatic and nutritious vegetable valued for its crunchy stems, leaves and roots. While their cultivation requires a bit of patience, following the right steps, you can enjoy the fresh harvest in your garden. In this guide you will find all the information you need to successfully grow celery.

How to grow celery? Choosing the right breed:

It is important to choose the right variety before growing celery. There are three main types of celery:

  • Root celery: Grown for its large, edible roots.
  • Celery: Grown on long, juicy stems.
  • Leafy celery: For the aromatic leaves used as a spice.

Root and stalk celery are most commonly grown in Lithuanian climate conditions. Choose varieties that are well adapted to your region climate.

Planting celery

Sowing time and way:

Due to the long vegetation period in Lithuania, it is recommended to grow celery from sprouts.

  • Sowing for sprouts: Seed the seeds in late February – early March.
    • Use small jars or cartridges with a damp peat substrate.
    • Sow the seeds on the surface, slightly pressed, but without the ground (the seeds sprout in the light). You can mix small celery seeds with sand to make it easier to sow less frequently.
    • Cover the jars with a film or glass and hold in a warm place in a warm place (20-22 ° C).
    • Constantly moisturize the soil with a spray.
    • The sprouts sprout slowly-about 2-3 weeks.
    • When the first real leaves appear, pick the sprouts (transplant into separate larger jars).
    • Grow seedlings in a light, cool (16-18 ° C) location, water regularly.
    • Before planting in the field (around mid -May), gradually harden the seedlings by getting used to the outdoor conditions.
  • Sowing directly to the soil: can also be sown directly into the soil in Maywhen the soil warms up, but the harvest will be later. Sow shallow (0.5 cm deep), leaving 30 cm rows.

Preparation of suitable location and soil:

  • Celery needs sunny, warm places.
  • The soil should be fertile, humid, fluffy and well drained. Celery does not like acidic soils (optimal pH 6.5-7.5).
  • Before planting, buy the soil, insert compost or rotten manure. The use of fresh manure is not recommended.

How to grow celery? Planting of seedlings in the ground:

  • Seedlings are planted in the second half of May, after the danger of frost.
  • Plant the seedlings at the same depth as they grew in the nurseries.
  • The distance between the root celery should be 30-40 cm between rows and 20-30 cm between the plants.
  • Plant the leafy celery at a distance of 25-30 cm between plants and 60-70 cm between rows.
  • Wake the planted seedlings abundantly.

Care:

  • Watering: Celery loves moisture, especially during active growth. Water regularly, preventing the soil from drying out.
  • Loosening: After each watering or rain, shake the soil surface to prevent the crust from forming and the roots will receive enough air.
  • Fertilization: Fertilize complex vegetable fertilizers several times during vegetation. Root celery loves potassium and boron, and nitrogen is important for lapestines.
  • Accumulation (for Lapotic Celery): For longer and softer stalks, they need to be gradually covered with earth, starting at 10-15 cm in height.
  • Mulch: Mulch helps maintain moisture in the soil and reduce weed growth.
  • Control of pests and diseases: Observe the plants and, if necessary, take measures against pests and diseases.

Harvesting:

  • Root celery: Remove the harvest in the fall, before the frost, when the roots reach the desired size.
  • Celery: You can start picking the stems from the end of the summer, when they grow enough.
  • Leafy celery: The leaves can be picked throughout the vegetation season as needed.

By following these tips, you will be able to successfully grow delicious and healthy celery in your garden!
