This Sunday (18), São Pedro Square, in the Vatican, was the scene of a historical event: the Entronization Mass, officially marking the beginning of its pontificate. Although he has formally assumed his duties since May 8, the ceremony symbolized the beginning of his leadership in the Catholic Church. During the Mass, Pope stressed the importance of preserving the Catholic tradition and expressed his intention to combat modernity that, he said, often tries to impose himself on the values of the Church. In his homily, he also criticized the global economic system, echoing Pope Francis’ struggle for social justice and advocating the protection of natural and poor resources.

The ceremony attracted thousands of faithful to São Pedro Square, who witnessed the delivery of important liturgical symbols to the new Pope, such as the papal pallium and the fisherman’s ring. In his speech, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that he does not want to be a centralizing figure in the church, but to promote a synodal view, with the active participation of all the faithful and cardinals. The presence of several heads of state, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, King Felipe VI of Spain, and vice presidents of the United States and Brazil, JD Vance and Geraldo Alckmin, respectively, highlighted the global importance of the event.

A curious detail of the Mass was the use of Brazilian incense, produced by the company Milagros Incenso, from São João da Boa Vista, interior of São Paulo. The company has maintained a relationship with the Vatican since 2007, when Pope Benedict XVI visited Brazil and appreciated the place incense. For enthronement mass, two exclusive versions of incense were delivered, one more intense and one softer. The company’s director, Martinho Rocha, expressed his positive expectation regarding the use of the product at the ceremony. Incense, in addition to its liturgical meaning, symbolizes the connection between the terrain and the divine, and its presence at Mass highlighted the Brazilian contribution to the event.
