Early, semi -early or late?
You need a few small things to “work with the potatoes”. Certainly to clarify what kind of potatoes you want to grow. There are 181 varieties in the Czech Republic and each differs either by the harvest time, the cooking type, the taste and the possibility of storage. “Before you start the work, decide what type of potato you want to grow – whether early, semi -early or late. For all, the harvest time differs from 100 to 150 days after planting.
Bet on a quality variety
“If you choose early potatoes, I recommend a variety of Adéla, Belan or Esmee. For semi -early varieties, prefer Agria, Benin or Laura. Vertical potato cultivation consists in placing tubers in thick plastic bags (IKEA bags), plastic barrels or old barrel. Then it is sufficient to pour the growth substrate into the selected container or bag of 65 liters and plant a sprouted potato in it. And it’s almost done.
Vertical cultivation
The difference between vertical and normal potato cultivation lies in layering. As soon as the tuber sprouts and its green leaves reach the substrate, pour the clay around them. The seedlings will continue to grow and build a larger root system “Slowly fill the entire container of clay during the filling. This creates a deep flower pot for one seedlings. Each increase in the substrate creates another floor of tasty ertepers,” says the expert. According to him, one seed potatoes can grow up to 6 kilograms of potatoes.
Easier work
But those who have tried vertical potato cultivation claim that it is not so hot with the crop. About two pounds of new potatoes usually meet under one potato shrub. Mostly it is a baby, because the individual tubers compete with each other and deprive them of nutrients. “The advantage of vertical cultivation is that you have simple access to your seedlings. Seedlings can be easily checked, maintained and harvested, which is a pleasant bonus.
More tubers, greater chance of success
The success rate of the seedlings also depends on the number of sprouts in one bag or container. Experts recommend placing 3-5 tubers, which you place asymmetrically in the area (sprouts up). But it is important that each plant has a little space and can evolve. “Always give the container adults, such as horse manure. Then add a mature substrate on it.
Bonus fertilizer: Coffee lotion!
Potatoes are generally thriving in more acidic soils from 5.5-6.5 pH. Therefore, as a cheap and nutritious fertilizer, you can use a coffee grounds. “Coffee pulp contains the main nutrients that the plant needs to grow, and it is nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. In its repertoire you will find other important substances such as magnesium, copper and calcium. This” nutritious “cocktail will gain amazing growth and development conditions. You can use the coffee grounds to fertilize by incorporating it lightly into the soil or making a liquid substrate from the Loger and Water (1: 5 ratio), which you leave for 1 – 2 weeks and then use as nutritious watering.
