The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, Pedro Nuno Santos, voted this morning at the Telheiras Elementary School in Lisbon, accompanied by his son, and regretted an “episode of violence” that will have taken place this Sunday against a socialist mayor.
Pedro Nuno Santos reveals that he was recorded this morning “An Episode of Violence” against Miguel Alexandre Teixeira Coelho, president of the Parish Council of Santa Maria Maior.
“We have to respond firmly against any kind of violence and aggression, defend democracy, civic participation. Most Portuguese do not review themselves in acts of violence, rather on the contrary, respect the choices of others even if they are different from ours.”
Speaking to journalists after voting, Pedro Nuno Santos says he will spend the day with family and friends, before following the election night with the PS entourage.
The socialist explains that it was important to vote in the company of his son, Sebastião, to show him how “this was one of the greatest achievements of our people.”
“It is an instrument of defense of the Portuguese, the weapon of the people (…) is a day who is taught freedom and democracy.”
To the Portuguese, Pedro Nuno Santos appeals that “do not leave to others the decision about the future we want, not to be surprised.”
It is possible to vote until 19h00
The voting tables will be open until 19h00 in mainland Portugal and Madeira, while in the Azores open and close an hour later in the time of Lisbon, due to the time difference.
In total, 230 deputies will be elected in 22 electoral circles – 18 of which in mainland Portugal and the rest in the Azores, Madeira, Europe and outside Europe.
In previous legislatures, on March 10, 2024, the abstention rate was 40.16%.
