Shipping troops to Ukraine "is no longer a topic under discussion"

Germany and Italy even assume that it is a theme “outside any political reality”

The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, and Germany Chancellor Friedrich Merz assured this Saturday that sending troops to Ukraine is no topic that is still under discussion.

“There is no discussion about sending troops to Ukraine, it is something out of any political reality, there is no reason to talk about it now,” said Friedrich Merz, quoted by EFE, at a joint press conference with Giorgia Meloni in Rome, under his first visit to Italy after taking office.

Friedrich Merz is in Italy to attend the early Mass of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate, scheduled for Sunday at the Vatican.

The German chancellor insisted on the need for war efforts on Ukraine to end the fighting.

“We are working to start a ceasefire, we want the silence of weapons,” said Friedrich Merz.

Giorgia Meloni reiterated that sending troops to Ukraine “is no longer a theme in discussion.”

“The issue of soldiers seems to have ended. And now we are available to participate in any format,” he added.

According to the Italian Prime Minister, the priorities are now “to continue to support Ukraine in their defense capacity” and contribute to obtaining “security guarantees” against Russia.

Asked by journalists, Meloni reaffirmed his skepticism about the idea of sending soldiers to Ukraine.

“I’ve expressed my doubts about the effectiveness of such an initiative, especially at a time when we are all working on a priority that is unconditional ceasefire,” he argued.
