They need your care: how to protect plants in heavy rains

We could not live without rain without our gardens. So while we hide under the umbrella, the plants enjoy the beneficial moisture full of sips. But nothing must be exaggerated. Too heavy rain is a great threat to plants and we should help them.

The sky occasionally sends more water to the ground without discretion at once than it would be good for nature. The rupture of the clouds then destroys not only human property, but also plants from the smallest to sturdy trees. At that moment they need our help. It is not just that it is wet – the point is that it is too wet…

Without nutrition and without air

While throughout the year we are trying to supplement the nutrients needed for successful growth and plant development, one such impressive downpour is wash away from the wet hand. Not only does it get rid of the remains of the plant benefits, and it will also suffocate it and the surface becomes impenetrable crust. Instead of the much needed refreshment, the garden will come to the garden, which young plants will hardly survive at all and the more resistant ones can soon have major problems with mold and rot. What about it?

Hit in time

As in most cases, even here will always be the most effective help, which will come before the problem itself. If it is clear that heavy rain is approaching, move all plants in containers to a safe place. Even if the rain should eventually avoid your garden, preventive measures are better than later sighs over the folded plants.

Move them or cover them

It is quite simple with “mobile” plants, but how to protect those that grow in free soil? If only a few individuals are, buckles are sufficient to turn upwards, from which you create a temporary coverage for individuals or smaller clumps. The whole flower bed can then cover a makeshift umbrella, made of a stronger sheet, firmly attached to the pins, which you place on the edge of the beds. Isn’t it the most transparent solution? Maybe not, but it will work – and that is the most important thing at that moment.

Mulching will also help

Mulch will help against too fast infiltration of water into the soil. A layer of chopped grass, straw, or even a bark, slows rain drops and the soil remains after such a natural misfortune. In addition, mud, which at other times would spray the underside of the leaves during steep rain, will remain this time where it does not hurt so much. The soiled leaves easily begin to succumb to mold, thus weakening the entire plant.

A well -prepared land is the foundation

Before the rain comes, better before placing the plants, prepare the soil so that it can handle the unexpected flow of water. The soil must be sufficiently breathable and permeable. So if you know that the one you have in the garden is too dense and clayey, rather in advance, add it to the addition of sand, compost, or perlita.

Support your plants

Whatever you do, the plants will probably be flat after the cloud rupture. That’s a big problem. So try to support them as quickly as possible so that they do not lie in the water or in the mud. As soon as you are amazed by the yellowing leaves, you should immediately get rid of the plants. It will also be necessary to drain water from the flower bed, which was not enough to drain. A simple ditch and gentle looping of the soil will help.

Get rid of pests

After the rains, there are also uninvited guests such as slugs and other pests. Therefore, beware of their increased incidence and prefer to intervene before it is too late. I will help copper tape, decoction of horsetail and other natural means.
