Sorting waste is a daily duty that takes even greater importance in the era of growing ecological awareness. However, not every subject is at first glance unambiguous in terms of its liquidation. Dishive sponges are a common part of the household, but many are not sure where to use them. How to properly throw them away and not harm the environment?
Where does the sponge belong to the dishes?
Mushrooms for dishes, body sponges or car are made of materials that are not recyclable. It is neither plastic nor paper nor metal, so they fit into any of the sorted waste categories.
- According to the rules in force, the sponges used should be thrown into the mixed municipal waste container. It is important that they are dry before the ejection – this detail is often overlooked.
Larger sponges than those used for upholstery and which do not fit into standard containers is recommended to be handed over at the collection point.
Dishwashed sponge belongs to mixed waste
The mixed waste, including sponges, is directed to specialized facilities where it is further processed. It is often burned under controlled conditions, thus obtaining electricity and heat. Residues, such as ash, can be further used in construction, for example in the construction of roads.
Alternatively, however, mixed waste may be processed in mechanical-biological facilities where it is sorted. The components suitable for recycling are captured and the residue is produced by the TAP fuel used in the industry.
Proper sorting of waste, even less obvious as sponge, is crucial for environmental protection. Thanks to proper disposal, we reduce the amount of waste in landfills and support the processes of recovery of energy and materials. It is a small step that can have a big impact – for us and for future generations.
