Brazilian economy grows 1.3% in the 1st quarter, says BC

Considered the preview of Gross Domestic Product, the Central Bank’s IBC-B (Economic Activity Index) rose 1.3% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the 4th quarter of 2024. The growth was pulled by agriculture, which advanced 6.1% in the period.

The industry grew 1.6% in the first quarter compared to the previous quarter, according to the BC. The service sector was up 0.7%.

Compared to the 1st quarter of 2024, the Brazilian economy grew 3.7% from January to March. Economic activity advanced 4.2% in the accumulated 12 months.

The IBC-BR rate in March to February in the seasonal adjustment series was 0.8%.

IBC-BR measures the evolution of economic activity and assists the Central Bank in decisions on possible changes in Selic, the basic interest rate. The index considers information on the level of activity of industry, commerce and services, and agriculture, as well as the volume of taxes.

However, the official indicator about the performance of the economy is GDP (Gross Domestic Product), calculated by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). GDP is the sum of everything the country has produced in a certain period. It is one of the most important indicators of the performance of an economy.

In IBGE’s official data, the Brazilian economy 3.4% in 2024 compared to 2023.
