The United Kingdom and the European Union on Monday has achieved significant agreements aimed at strengthening defense cooperation, facilitating grocery trade and border control, the British government confirmed. The agreement is part of a broader effort to restore relations between London and Brussels almost nine years after the referendum on Britain’s withdrawal from the Euroblock. This is reported by TASR, which refers to AP and AFP reports.
The leaders of both parties have reached an agreement at a time when the United States signaled a reduction in its commitment to European security. “It is time to look forward, move away from old stale debates and political struggles to find common sense and practical solutions that will bring the best to the British,” announced by British Prime Minister Keir Starr.
According to him, new agreements will reduce bureaucracy, support the growth of the British economy and restore relations with the 27-member block since the United Kingdom’s departure from the EU in 2020. Britain and the EU agreed on Monday at a breakthrough London summit on a new security and defense pact, both parties confirmed. It will open the British companies to participate in large armory orders of the block under the new Union program worth € 150 billion.
The parties agreed to extend the rights of fishing for European ships in British waters for another 12 years, ie 2038. Politico described this as a significant concession by London, who came after intensive lobbying of France. The euroblock is to remove some bureaucratic obstacles to importing food from the United Kingdom.
Although the EU is the largest business partner of Britain, the country from Brexit has hit a 21 % decline in exports due to more demanding border controls or official regulations. Agreements represent the most important shift in relations between London and Brussels from Brexit with the declared goal of promoting economic growth and strengthening security on the European continent.
Labor Prime Minister Keir Starmer has undertaken to renew relations with the EU since joining office last yearwhich were relatively cool under the previous conservative government. However, it refuses to return to the single market and to the customs union.
