According to the SMEM survey, the relationship of Czechs to Slovakia has deteriorated significantly. While in the past the Czechs rated it regularly the best, it fell to the tenth place in the latest survey. The evaluation of the Slovak Head of State was also worse by up to 30 percentage points. However, STEM pointed out that the relationship of Czechs to the Slovaks has not changed too much and the results of the survey seem to be related to current political events in Slovakiainforms the TASR newsletter in Prague.
In a survey on Czech relations with selected countries of the world and foreign personalities, who has been doing SMEM since the 1990s, respondents evaluate their relationship with school marks. Slovakia gave the best grades 61 percent of people, which is ten percentage points less than last year. On the contrary, four and five ratings increased by six percentage points compared to last year.
Slovak President Petr Pellegrini is positively evaluated by 38 percent of Czechs, and his predecessor Zuzana Čaputová positively rated her mandate positively in the last year of 68 percent of Czech citizens. According to SME, Pellegrini has already made an opinion for people, for whom it was not very well known last year and in comparison with 2024, the proportion of people who evaluate it unfavorably increased by ten percentage points.
According to Stem, the relationship of Czechs to the Slovaks has not changed too much. “A significant decline in the positive evaluation of the declining trend of the previous two years is first related to the current political events in the country, where after the arrival of the fourth government (Robert) Fico in the autumn of 2023, there was a cooling of relations with the Czech Republic. The feature in our country does not enjoy greater favor, ” commented on the results Analyst Stem Silvia Petty.
Slovakia, which has so far held the first place in this survey, was replaced by Switzerland this year. Czechs also have a better relationship with Canada, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and Denmark. The best -evaluated foreign personality was Pope Francis (the survey was carried out just before his death). Behind him was the ending Polish President Andrzej Duda, who improved by seven percentage points compared to last year. The worst rated was traditionally Russian President Vladimir Putin.
