The Israeli president, about the entry of help in Gaza: “It is vital for Israel to maintain his humanity”
The Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, celebrated on Monday the decision of the Benjamin Netanyahu government to allow the entry of a “minimal” amount of food to Gaza after more than two months of blocking that the Palestinian enclave has left to the edge of the famine. According to Herzog, the decision is vital for Israel to maintain its military capabilities, but also its humanity.
“This step is vital for Israel to maintain its military capabilities, to act in accordance with international law and, more importantly, to maintain our humanity in this tragedy,” said Israeli President in the Plenary Session of the World Congress of Judaism, in Jerusalem. “We will not allow our enemy to dehumanize us,” he said, “we must be better.” However, Netanyahu has justified the measure in international pressure against the fear that the USA withdraw your support, not for humanitarian reasons.
Israel has prevented the entry of food, medicines and other essential supplies to Gaza for more than two months. In recent days, images of malnourished children have been seen to the extreme, as well as great agglomerations of men, women and children begging with staves in their hand due to the few rations that could supply outdoor kitchens. A week ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) denounced that half a million people in Gaza (with a population of around 2.1 million) are on the verge of famine because of the Israeli block.
In this sense, Herzog has welcomed the government’s decision, announced on Sunday, to resume food access, although in a “minimum” amount and has branded the measure as “criticism of maintaining basic human conditions.”
Israel alleges that the blockade at the entrance of basic goods is due to the fact that the Islamist group Hamas appropriated them, although the measure was also seen by the analysts then as a way of pressing the organization to access the terms of Israel in the negotiations of the second phase of the truce (which never occurred).
