A debate about the, which would take place at Rio de Janeiro’s headquarters next Wednesday (21), was rescheduled for the PUC campus in the city, on the same date.
The change occurred after the entity that represents the lawyers denied permission for the event to take place at its headquarters.
The seminar, named “The New Civil Code: Debates on the proposals for change in the Brazilian Civil Code”, had among its academics and lawyers mostly contrary to the project.
The event folder was even posted on the OAB-RJ digital channels, but then was removed from the air by the entity.
Resathering, some of the seminar organizers say they have received information that the Order suffered political pressure from some of those responsible for writing the new code project.
The text is being discussed in a project of former president of the house. The senator, in turn, based his work at a lawsuit of law experts chaired by Minister Luiz Salomão, of the STJ (Superior Court of Justice).
In a statement, the OAB said it canceled the seminar because the event was unbalanced. “OAB-RJ values democratic debate with society, making room for representatives of different lines of thought. In the specific case, the event included only debaters with positions contrary to changes in the Brazilian Civil Code,” says the entity
The Order states that it intended to set a new date, with the presence of but says this was not possible because the event was transferred to another place, on the same date.
The OAB-RJ also says that “it remains open to the debate on any issues related to Brazilian law and society, always granting the word to all opinions.”
