“The Secret Agent”, a film by the Brazilian director starring, was applauded standing for ten minutes on Sunday (18), shortly after his debut in the show of the Cannes Film Festival, where he competes for the Golden Palm. Hugs and kisses between the film team marked the end of the screening on the Grand the Théâtre Lumière, while the crowded audience applauded. The projection ended with some words from the director, who, after thanking his team’s work, stressed that “some of the biggest movies” they saw in the cinema were seen precisely on Sunday afternoon screenings.

This is Mendonça Filho’s fourth fiction feature film, which this time travels to Brazil from 1977, in the middle of military dictatorship, but at a time when social pressure begins to leave the powerful nervous. Moura plays Marcelo, a technology researcher and university professor who escapes the attempt of a powerful company to force one of his patents. He arrives in his hometown, Recife, to pick up his son, who is being cared for by his grandparents.

The actor has another impeccable performance in a movie populated by strange characters, tragicomic moments and was very well received in Cannes by international critics, which described him as “unbridled and exciting,” according to “Screen” magazine. Or even “stunning”, in the opinion of “Variety”, who stressed that in this drama the Brazilian director “reveals a surprising clandestine support network that operated during the dictatorship of the country, when human lives were considered unpensable”.

Although the “Deadline” criticizes the duration of the movie (158 minutes) and consider that its script is “sometimes disconnected”, also recognizes that Mendonça Filho “has managed to infuse style and emotion” in the narrative. A narrative enriched and enchanted by the carnival that reigns in the streets of Recife, which contributes to the confusion in which the characters live and reflects Brazil of the time.

And in which music also plays an important role, with a spectacular mix of carnival rhythms and American songs of the time. Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leone, Carlos Francisco, Alice Carvalho, Robério Diogenes and Udo Kier are some of the other actors who starred in the film, which the team will present to the press on Monday in Cannes.
