PS PS Pedro Nuno Santos announced early in the morning that he would withdraw from his post in response to defeat in parliamentary elections. “I will declare the internal party elections in which I will not run,” Santos said.
Prime Minister Luis Montenegra’s winning party would need to get up to 116 parliamentary seats. Montenegro has in the past rejected cooperation with Cheg, which he described as “unreliable” and “unsuitable for governance”.
Four more chairs remain in Parliament to represent the Portuguese living abroad. However, the results of who gets them will only be known in a few days.
Sunday elections were the third parliamentary elections in Portugal over three years. According to AP, the next minority government will probably not end the worst episode of political instability in the country for decades.
The election was announced by President Marcelo, after Montenegro failed in March to pronounce confidence in Parliament, which he himself proposed after allegations of conflict of interest related to his business company’s business. The company had several clients who had government contracts. Montenegro denied a mistake that he did not participate in the management of the company he now handed over to his children.
