A 19 -year -old, identified as Natanael Venancio Almeida, was shot by the Military Police in the South Zone of last Sunday (18). Almeida was riding a motorcycle without a helmet and without the National Driver’s License (CNH) when he decided to escape from a ROCAM approach, being chased to his residence, where he was shot. Maria Bethania Venâncio, mother of the young man, said he was hit in front of her while trying to protect himself from the shots. The motorcycle, acquired with the help of his mother, was used by Almeida to work as a delivery man. He leaves a daughter of a few months, which makes the situation even more tragic for the family.
On Monday, the 19th, a group of approximately 30 people gathered to protest against Natanael’s death, blocking Carlos Caldeira Filho Avenue and burning a vehicle in indignation. The demonstration reflects the growing dissatisfaction of the population regarding police violence and lack of liability. The State Department of Public Security (SSP) reported that the case is under investigation by the Department of Homicides and Protection of Persons (DHPP) and the Military Police itself. Authorities are analyzing security cameras images and seizing the weapons used in the action.
The SSP also stressed that it is committed to strictly investigating any allegation of abuse by its agents. Although recent data indicates a 25% reduction in police caused by police in São Paulo in the first quarter of this year compared to the previous year, police lethality still remains at high levels, generating concerns in society.
