Renault is willing to provide technology to other automakers to help increase the total production of vehicles with shared characteristics, helping to reduce production costs, said French group’s executive president Luca de Meo on Tuesday.

De Meo, of Italian nationality, said in a parliamentary audience in Rome that Renault was not discouraged by its recent failed attempt to cooperate with Volkswagen.

“We are still totally open,” he said.

Renault is still open to providing technology to rivals, says president

Renault, which over the years has cooperated in specific areas of the market with several of its rivals, including Mercedes and Fiat, last year started discussions with Volkswagen about a plan to jointly develop an affordable electric version of compact twingo. Volkwagen abandoned negotiations after a few months.

De Meo said on Tuesday that technology sharing-including platforms, or architectures that can base several different models-can be useful in compact and commercial vehicle segments.

“These areas usually require large investments and generate small margins,” he said.
