Decree establishes 16 beaches prohibitions, including use of scooters on the boardwalk; New rules take place from May 31st
The City of Rio de Janeiro published one that prohibits 16 conduct on the beaches of the city, including live music in kiosks, use of electric scooters on the boardwalk and installation of flags in the sand. The document was released on Friday (16.MAI.2025) and will come into force from May 31st. The measure aims to organize the use of public space on the beaches of Rio.
The municipal decree establishes restrictions that affect the functioning of kiosks and tents on the beaches of Rio. Among the new standards are the ban on glass bottles, performance of music and display of flags in the shores of the waterfront.
The determinations have generated negative reactions of owners of establishments and usual beaches. Although the decree only officially in force on the 31st of this month, City Hall inspectors have already started actions on the waterfront.
During inspections carried out on Monday (19.MAI.2025), traders were forced to reverse the tents identification ranges to not display the names of the spaces.
The beaches of the South Zone and the West Zone are the main affected by municipal determinations, which apply to the entire length of the city’s edge.
The municipal administration has not yet disclosed information on how permanent inspection will be carried out after the decree will be entry into force, or what penalties applied to offenders.
Alalaô Kiosk, an establishment located in Ipanema, has spoken out against the new rules through its Instagram profile, where it discloses an online petition against the ban on live music in the kiosks. In the publication, the establishment states that “About 100 musicians performed in the eclectic wheels” that happen on site.
The text published by the kiosk also criticizes the mayor’s stance, classifying the decree as “Contradictory, coming from a mayor in love with the street vitality of Rio de Janeiro and who has just promoted a planetary mega event in Copacabana”.
The Rio de Janeiro City Council makes this Thursday (20.MAI.2025), at 10am, a public hearing to discuss Bill 488/2025, which creates the River Orla Statute.
