Spain ordered the Airbnb to remove 65,000 offers due to breaches of rental rules and the availability of housing.
On Monday, the Spanish authorities ordered the online Airbnb platform to remove more than 65,000 holidays in the country. According to DPA, TASR writes about it.
The Spanish Ministry of Consumer Rights has appealed to breach of rental rules, such as missing official information on landlords, whether it is a natural or legal person and irregularities between the information and official records. In recent months, Spain has been turned to the European Airbnb headquarters in Ireland for the third time to remove bids that were considered illegal.
Crisis of housing availability
The Spanish authorities have long been trying to limit the rental of recreational homes against the background of the growing crisis of the availability of housing in Spain. The crisis has also caused extensive protests against rising rental and prices of houses. Demand for housing in Spain far exceeds the offer, especially in large cities and tourist centers, which increases housing prices. At the beginning of April, several demonstrations were held for the affordable rent. The total number of apartments offered within Airbnb in Spain is estimated at more than 400,000.
Problems with the registration of rental
Virtually the entire Spanish territory must be officially registered for rental houses. However, according to the Ministry, many offers within the platform do not have a license number or official registration. For example, it allows tenants to seek consumer protection in case of problems.
The Airbnb platform has applied for temporary legal protection against one of the removal orders concerning 5,800 ads. The Higher Administrative Court in Madrid dismissed the petition.
