With summer getting closer to coming, many Portuguese already ‘dream’ with the beaches of the Algarve. However, after several beach days, some tourists begin to look for different plans and in the southern region of the country there are also several walkways that provide large walks, without having to give up their dives in the Atlantic Ocean.
The largest passenger in the Algarve
Overwhels of Alvor, located in the municipality of Portimão, represent one of the most extensive pedestrian structures of the Algarve. About six kilometers long, this route offers a continuous connection between the Three Brothers’ Beach and the Ria de Alvor, covering coastal zones of high environmental wealth. Because it is located by the sea and the Ria, the environment that surrounds the walkway changes according to the tides.
This route unfolds next to the Dunar cord, in an area where the vegetation adapts to saline conditions and the constant impact of the wind. Proximity to the sea allows a permanent view of walking to the ocean, and it is possible to observe the changes in the coastal line throughout the year.
Ecosystems of the Ria de Alvor
Upon arriving at the Ria de Alvor, the walkway extends through shoal areas, small beaches and dune extensions. This wet zone houses an ecosystem of great diversity, being the habitat of dozens of aquatic and migratory bird species, which find shelter, food and space for reproduction.
The distance traveled may vary depending on the chosen route. If the visitor decides to make the full trip of round trip, including the branches that cross the shoes and dunes, the total around 12 kilometers. Write the blog that the absence of great unevenness makes this route accessible to walkers of different levels of physical preparation.
Valorization of Natural Heritage
Inaugurated in 2016, the Overwhels of Alvor played a relevant role in valuing the natural heritage of the region. Its implementation allowed to organize human access to sensitive areas, reducing the impact on ecosystems and promoting a more sustainable use of the territory.
The surrounding beaches, namely between the Ria de Alvor and the Arade River estuary, are characterized by thin sands and high transparency waters. These bathing zones are frequented by both residents and visitors and are harmoniously integrated with the region’s protected natural landscape.

Natural Formation of Dunes and Sapais
The process of formation of the dunes and sapais is due to the continuous action of the wind, which carries and places sand particles along the coast. This natural dynamic also contributed to the creation of adjacent moist habitats, in which species adapted to saline environments develop.
Ria de Alvor benefits a strategic location, where the climate effects of the Atlantic are crossed with the morphological characteristics of the region. This confluence results in a rich and complex natural system, with high ecological importance, especially for local and migratory avifauna.
Accesses and conditions for visitors
Since its opening, the route has been valued by the conditions it offers to the visitor. The existence of parking parks with a capacity of more than a thousand vehicles facilitates access, even in times of high tourist demand. The pedestrian infrastructure is signaled and equipped with rest zones.
The ease of the route, without sharp slopes, makes it ideal for people who start walking or looking for a leisure activity with less physical requirement. It is, however, recommended to avoid the highest heat, given the scarcity of shadow along much of the route.
Equipment and preparation
Along the way is advisable to wear appropriate clothing, sunscreen, hat and constant hydration. In the hottest months, the visitor can also combine the walk with leisure moments on the adjacent beaches, and it is convenient to carry bath and towel.
Throughout the walkway there are various points of interest, such as the Three Brothers Beach, known for its peculiar rock formations. The area is often sought by photography enthusiasts and those who appreciate the tranquility of coastal landscapes.
Environmental Information and Awareness
In the area of the Ria de Alvor, the route includes informative panels on the fauna, flora and geological characteristics of the region. This information allows a closer contact with scientific knowledge and promote environmental awareness among visitors who pass by.
