The measure is part of a broader package that wants to combat the mass entry of product from Chinese platforms in Europe and protect local producers from unfair competition.

The measure, announced by the trade commissioner Maroš šefčovič this Tuesday, is part of a wider reform to modernize the EU customs system and protect local producers.

According to the proposed plan, a handling rate of 2 euros will be applied to direct orders to the consumer with value less than 150 euroswhile a reduced rate of 0.50 euros will be charged for bulk remittances delivered to warehouses in the EU.

These rates will be paid by e -commerce platforms and not for consumers. The goal is to encourage companies to consolidate deliveries, making them easier to inspect and manage under the EU regulations.

“In fact, it is only to compensate for the work being done by customs employees,” šefčovi told the members of the Internal Market Commission and the protection of consumers of the European Parliament.

The treatment rate would constitute a temporary solution before a more comprehensive customs review, which includes the creation of a Single Customs Authority of the EU and a computer system.
