It warned, on Wednesday (21), that hosting peace conversations among AEA, NO, would need a “very intensive” preparation after the US President, suggested this week’s idea. After a telephone conversation of more than two hours with his Russian homologist, Trump said on Monday that Russia and Ukraine would “immediately” negotiates for a ceasefire. But Moscow, who invaded Ukraine in February 2022, did not want to offer a schedule for it. The Italian Prime Minister, said on Tuesday that he had confirmed him that the Vatican was willing to host peace conversations between both sides.

But German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius highlighted the difficulty that would represent the meeting on Wednesday. “Any such meeting needs very, very intense preparations, so it’s very speculative to talk when or in what format they could happen,” he said. Russians and Ukrainians maintained direct negotiations last week, for the first time in three years. But the conversations, which took place in Istanbul, failed to reach a ceasefire agreement. “After Istanbul’s events, we know that it is imperative that serious conversations be held and that delegations really have the power to negotiate a ceasefire,” said Kornelius.

“Any conversation in the Vatican has to occur under these conditions,” he insisted. Germany and other European allies of Kiev have stated that they plan to increase the pressure on Moscow after the European Union approved its 17th Package of Sanctions against Russia last week.
